WELCOME TO GROWING CHILDREN

It’s all about relationship

Growing Children is an organisation with children and families at the heart of everything we do. Dr. Deidré Nel started Growing Children to open a trauma-informed line of communication with parents, caregivers and professionals. Trauma-informed strategies can be implemented as either a reactive response or a preventative measure to ensure your child is safe, happy and healthy.

How we help

People are relational and are intended to be part of a larger whole. Trauma can interfere with a child’s ability to connect and regulate, and therefore lead to challenging behaviours. Growing Children has years of trauma-informed expertise to help support children, parents and caregivers, professionals and organisations. Our focus is on trauma-informed strategies that offer effective, ongoing support to children and all others that are involved.

Founder of Growing Children

My passion for children and families motivated me to become a social worker more than 30 years ago. I continued with postgrad studies in Social Work, specialising in Play Therapy. Over the past six years I have continued my learning about the impact of trauma on the developing child, through the Neurosequential Model Network and I am a certified Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics trainer. I have worked closely with children and families within the foster care sector and have realised how tough life can be if you have experienced trauma and adversity early in life. My mission is to help children who have experienced significant hardship, to heal and build resilience; to empower parents and caregivers to be the emotional containers and change agents in the lives of their children and to enable professionals and organisations to draw on and build into the trauma sensitive strengths and strategies that they have, and facilitate change where necessary.

Deidré is very knowledgeable and has helped us to not only understand trauma and its impacts on children but how to respond to behaviour and how to help our children heal. She can explain the impact on the brain in ways that make it understandable and interesting. She helped us to understand why our foster children were behaving in certain ways and the best way to respond to them. Her work makes a huge difference, and we can't recommend her highly enough.

Working with Deidré helped me translate knowledge regarding trauma into simple everyday tools that support children and caregivers to build supportive relationships. Caregivers were able to reframe challenging behaviour and respond with nurture, consistency and predictability. Caregivers using these simple routines and strategies with their children saw significant improvement in their emotional wellbeing and behaviour. These changes inspired real hope in real families.
